...more Wiki Week 2

I still think we should have a staff wiki for updates, input and suggestions. It might also be handy to have a public patron wiki to use as a public suggestion box sort of thing. I'd be a little nervous as to what some people may write though. I'm not sure there's a way to filter some stuff that comes through.

Wiki Week 2

Well, I think I figured out how to edit a wiki page. I found my entry under "recent activities" for the Port Orchard wiki page. I'm hoping that is where it was supposed to show up. Overall, I guess I have an understanding of how wikis work having had exposure to them from previous jobs. I guess it's not so intimidating, although I'm still not really into the editing of wikis. They can be enjoyable and informative to read, but that's about all I'm interested in.

Wikis Week 1

For the Wiki Week 1 assignment I had a hard time trying to come up w/ any super creative wiki ideas. But I do think an online suggestion box sort of thing would be great! This could be anything pertaining to working within the library that only library staff had access to. Ideas such as how to do things more efficiently, cleanliness issues within the work environment or general daily updates.

I think YouTube will come in very handy. I looked up info on watercolor painting and they had several demonstrations available for me to watch. I was thrilled with that. I also watched a demo on how to shear sheep...not that I will need that any time soon. But it was neat to watch. I was able to successfully find the KRL fish story and watched videos on book cart drill teams. That was an interesting sight! They almost looked like profession drill cart teamsters! Some people, I think, have too much time on their hands!

Weeks 7/8 LibraryThing

Well, I successfully cataloged 4 different books on subjects that interest me. I also managed to tag them as well. I didn't realize it was so easy to just type in a tite or subject and have so many nice book options pop up. And they weren't crappy looking books either! They looked very current and popular! It's very cool that they put the front cover of the book with the listing as well. That way, if you decide to go out and purchase the book you have a better idea of what to look for. I'm one of those people that often will not buy a book if I don't like the cover. I see myself using this quite a bit. I accidentally opened up 2 accounts for myself and am not sure how to cancel the other.

Flickr Weeks 5/6

So I went to Flickr and found a few cool things. I really liked the world map of photos, although I wish they would clearly label the city/country you are clicking on. I also thought the calendar of photos was cool. It might be fun to pick a photo off of the calendar in which say...a friend's birthday falls and share it with them in some way. One photo I particularily liked was found on the November '07 calendar. It was a black and white photo of a metropolitan city in the background with a vibrant glass of red wine (in color) in the foreground. I could see myself using this site at some point just for fun.

RSS Week 4

To be honest, I'm not a big fan of RSS. I had a bit of trouble figuring some of it out. I'm not even sure I did everything correctly. I tried to get a feed from Farm and Ranch Living magazine, but couldn't get it to work somehow. I was able to get a feed from Mother Earth News to cooperate for me. I'll be eager to get updates from them. I don't see myself really using RSS too much, though.

Tagging/Del.icio.us-Week 3

Originally, I thought creating a del.icio.us account and tagging would be very difficult, but now that I've done it it's really not that bad! I think the "links saved for you by other people" option on del.icio.us could be handy for KRL folks. It's neat that friends can look at your social bookmarks and leave suggestions for you based on what interests you have indicated. For example, if a patron has a del.icio.us account and speaks with a librarian about finding books on a certain topic like...gardening, well the librarian could always go to the patron's del.icio.us site and make even more reading suggestions later on. It could also be very useful for topics or specialty niches that can be difficult to find immediate information on. I thought that was the most interesting aspect of del.icio.us, as well as simply being able to just click on the link and bam! You're there. The sites I tagged include: my blog VeggieChickens.blogspot.com, Mother Earth News magazine, Half.com by Ebay, Kitsap Regional Library, McMurray Hatchery, and Del's Farm Supply Store.

43 Things I might do this year

I found the article "43 Things I Might Do This Year" to be a little inspiring. I am a big list maker and am a bit of a procrastinator and so, naturally, setting goals and writing them down on paper holds me more accountable to achieving those goals. Actually accomplishing 43 new things in one year sounds very ambitious, but in a good kind of way. Setting a goal and writing it down also reminds me of what needs to get done, whether it be daily chores or learning a new musical instrument. As for the more challenging and intimidating goals, seeing them on paper does strike up a little bit of fear in me, but it also inspires me to accomplish them which means I can add another check mark to my list.
